PB Institution
PB Fish Shop
๐ 1775 Garnet Ave, Pacific Beach ยท thefishshops.com
Since 2010, PB Fish Shop has been the anchor of Pacific Beach’s dining scene โ a casual, dog-friendly seafood counter where fresh fish gets the respect it deserves. Their signature Cajun dry rub (sweet brown sugar, mild spice) makes every piece of mahi, halibut, or ahi pop whether it’s on a taco, sandwich, salad, or full plate. The TKO taco with tropical mango salsa has a cult following, and the Elote taco topped with cotija is one of the best bites in the neighborhood. Local craft beers on tap, no corkage fee on wine, and shaded patio seating round out an experience that perfectly captures the San Diego beach-town lifestyle.

OB Noodle House
๐ 2218 Cable St, Ocean Beach (+ Bar 1502 on Niagara) ยท obnoodlehouse.com
One of Ocean Beach’s most beloved institutions โ an Asian fusion gastropub run by brothers Steve and Kyle Yeng, who grew up in OB after their family emigrated from Southeast Asia. The restaurant is equal parts community story and incredible food. Featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives (he called the pho one of the best he’d ever had). Their house special fried rice with father’s secret Chinese sausage recipe, the Vietnamese sizzling fish, and Korean short ribs are must-orders. Over 40 craft taps, house sake, and the world-famous Peanut Butter Jameson shot. The mural on the back wall tells the family’s story.
The Story Behind It

Dockside Dining
Mitch’s Seafood
๐ 1403 Scott St, Point Loma (on the sportfishing dock) ยท mitchsseafood.com
If San Diego had to pick one restaurant that captures the essence of the city, it would be Mitch’s. Founded in 2008 by three Point Loma fishing families, Mitch’s sits directly on the sportfishing dock where the boats come in each morning โ which is exactly where your lunch came from. Order at the counter, grab a picnic table on the dock with views of the fishing fleet, and eat wahoo, swordfish, or halibut caught that morning. The fish tacos on corn tortillas with lime crema, the wahoo sandwich on a torta bun, and the fisherman’s stew are iconic. Open daily 8amโ9pm for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. No reservations, no dogs, and expect a line โ worth every minute.
Tips for Your Visit

Order by fish type โ whatever’s freshest (wahoo, swordfish, halibut) will be chalked on the daily board when you arrive
Parking tip โ there’s a paid lot behind the restaurant plus a handful of free 1-hour spots on the street

Tips Before You Go
Reserve the Big Ones
Sushi Ota, The Fishery, and George’s at the Cove require reservations โ often weeks out on weekends. Book the day you arrive in San Diego. Mitch’s, El Pescador, PB Fish Shop, and Roberto’s are all walk-up. OB Noodle House can be a 30-minute wait on weekend evenings.
San Diego Fish Tacos 101
Classic San Diego fish tacos come on corn tortillas, not flour โ with shredded cabbage, pico de gallo, and a white crema sauce (usually mayonnaise-based, not sour cream). Fried Baja-style is traditional; grilled is the lighter local option. The fish always matters more than the toppings.
Parking by Neighborhood
PB/Mission Beach: street parking fills fast after 10am in summer โ ride a bike or walk. La Jolla: paid lots on Prospect St, arrive before 11am on weekends. Point Loma/Mitch’s: paid lot behind the restaurant. OB: street parking on Newport Ave is easier than it looks.
Cash Is King (Sometimes)
La Perlita’s walk-up window and Roberto’s prefer cash. Poma’s Deli and Surf Side work best with cash or debit. Mitch’s takes cards but the line moves faster with cash. Big Jim’s is card-friendly. Keep $40 in small bills in your beach bag for the best no-reservation meals in the city.
Best Times to Visit
Mitch’s is best for breakfast or early lunch (before noon) when the catch is freshest and the line is shorter. Liberty Public Market is ideal weekdays 11amโ2pm. Sushi Ota’s sushi bar is best on weekday evenings when you can watch the chefs work. Oscar’s is best for a late brunch around 10am.
Dog-Friendly Dining
PB Fish Shop, Molly’s Mission Beach, and Sandbox Pizza all welcome dogs on their patios. Liberty Public Market is dog-friendly throughout the outdoor areas. Mitch’s now has a no-pets policy (service animals welcome). El Pescador’s patio is dog-friendly for takeout dining. Always bring a water bowl โ it’s hot in summer.
Walk to most of these restaurants.
Our Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, and Ocean Beach vacation rentals put you minutes from nearly every spot on this list โ on foot or by bike. No parking stress, no Uber fees.
