Belmont Park
📍 3146 Mission Blvd, Mission Beach · Steps from our vacation rentals
The beating heart of Mission Beach since 1925 — and the family attraction closest to our vacation rentals. Belmont Park is a genuine oceanfront amusement park with free entry: you walk in and pay only for what you ride or do. The centerpiece is the historic Giant Dipper wooden roller coaster, one of the oldest surviving wooden coasters in the US, which has been thrilling riders since 1925. Beyond the coaster: carnival rides for all ages, an arcade, mini golf, escape rooms, go-karts, an indoor surf wave (FlowRider), and Plunge San Diego — one of the largest indoor pools in Southern California, perfect for younger kids. The complex also has excellent food options, ice cream, and shopping along the boardwalk. The Fit Athletic Club rooftop deck offers stunning 360-degree views over the ocean and Mission Bay. Literally across the street from several of our Mission Beach vacation rentals.

Getting the Most of Belmont Park
🎢The Giant Dipper is a must — this historic 1925 wooden coaster is one of the last of its kind. The ride is as much a piece of San Diego history as it is fun. Height requirement: 50 inches (younger kids can watch from Plunge’s pool deck)
🌊FlowRider surf wave — a great intro to surfing for older kids and teens. Sessions are booked in advance online. It fills up on summer afternoons — book when you wake up or the night before
🏊Plunge San Diego for younger kids — the heated indoor pool with slides is perfect for toddlers and early swimmers. No ocean intimidation, no sun exposure. Day passes are reasonably priced
🌅Evening on the boardwalk — Belmont Park comes alive at dusk. Grab ice cream, ride the coaster as the sun drops, watch surfers from the boardwalk. One of the quintessential Mission Beach experiences

Marine Theme Park 📍 ~10 min from Rentals
SeaWorld San Diego
📍 500 SeaWorld Dr, Mission Bay · ~10 min from PB/Mission Beach
A San Diego institution since 1964, SeaWorld sits right on Mission Bay — just minutes from our vacation rentals — and offers a genuinely unique combination of marine animal experiences, thrill rides, live shows, and conservation programs. The park provides rescue and rehabilitation for injured marine animals across Southern California — something genuinely worth explaining to kids before you visit. Highlights include Orca Encounter, Sea Lions Live, three roller coasters (Electric Eel, Manta, and Tidal Twister), the iconic Bayside Skyride gondolas over the bay, and a wide range of animal encounter areas. SeaWorld also runs spectacular holiday fireworks shows in summer that are visible from Mission Beach — a bonus for our rental guests. Buy tickets online for significant savings over the gate price.

World-Famous Zoo ⭐ #1 Ranked Zoo in the US
San Diego Zoo
📍 2920 Zoo Dr, Balboa Park · ~20 min from PB / Mission Beach
One of the most celebrated zoological parks in the world — and a full day out by itself. The San Diego Zoo is home to more than 12,000 animals representing 650 species across 100 acres of Balboa Park, including 3,700 rare and endangered animals. The collection is extraordinary: giant pandas, polar bears, koalas, gorillas, orangutans, komodo dragons, sun bears — species you simply won’t see at most zoos. The terrain is hilly (wear good shoes) and the park is large enough that most families benefit from the double-decker Guided Bus Tour at the start of the day to get oriented. The Skyfari aerial gondola gives a stunning bird’s-eye view over the canopy. The kids’ zone has a carousel, splash pad, and dedicated petting area. Budget a full 6–8 hours. The zoo is one of the leading conservation organizations in the world — every ticket contributes directly to breeding programs for endangered species.

Tips for the Zoo
🚌Start with the Bus Tour — the double-decker Guided Bus Tour runs at opening and gives you a 35-minute overview of the whole park. It’s the best way to orient yourselves and decide what to prioritize for the rest of the day
🌳Arrive at opening (9am) — animals are most active in the morning before the heat of the day. By early afternoon many retreat to shade and are harder to spot. Summer mornings are also before the midday crowds arrive
👟Wear proper shoes — the zoo is hilly. A lot of families underestimate this with young children. A stroller for under-5s is strongly recommended. Strollers and wagons can be rented at the zoo entrance
🍽Bring your own food — outside food is permitted and the zoo’s internal food is expensive. A small backpack cooler with snacks and water makes a long day much easier (and cheaper)
🦒
Safari Park — Day Trip 1,800 Acres of Free-Roaming Animals
San Diego Zoo Safari Park
📍 15500 San Pasqual Valley Rd, Escondido · ~45 min from PB
The sister property to the San Diego Zoo — and an utterly different experience. Where the Zoo places you close to individual animals in curated habitats, the Safari Park puts you in the middle of 1,800 acres of open savannah where lions, elephants, giraffes, rhinos, and African antelope roam in vast free-range enclosures visible from tram tours and walking paths. The Africa Tram tour is the essential first stop — a narrated loop around the largest exhibits. The Caravan Safari takes a smaller group through Asian Savannah and African Plains in an open-air truck for an immersive, up-close experience (book in advance, it sells out). Thrill-seekers can try the Flightline Safari zipline over the enclosures. The scale here is incomparable — seeing a herd of giraffes moving across open ground is unlike anything at a conventional zoo.

Theme Park — Carlsbad Best Ages: 2–12
LEGOLAND California
📍 One LEGOLAND Dr, Carlsbad · ~40 min from PB
The perfect theme park for younger families — LEGOLAND California is designed specifically for children aged 2–12, with an almost complete absence of the intimidating mega-coasters that make older parks unsuitable for little ones. The park is compact enough to do in half a day or a relaxed full day, with dozens of rides, building activities, and interactive attractions across themed LEGO worlds. Highlights include Miniland USA (an astonishing LEGO recreation of American cities and landmarks), a junior roller coaster, a boat ride, and a 4D cinema. The LEGOLAND Water Park is a separate ticket covering more than seven water slides, a lazy river where kids can build their own LEGO raft, Pirate Reef, and a wave pool across 10 acres — easily a full afternoon on its own in summer. The LEGOLAND Hotel on-site is an experience in itself if you want to make it an overnight.

Planning Your LEGOLAND Day
🏜Water Park in the morning — if visiting in summer, start at the Water Park (when it’s less busy) and move to the main park in the afternoon. Lines at the slides are shortest before 11am
🏙Miniland USA is unmissable — an extraordinary recreation of Las Vegas, Washington D.C., New York, and San Francisco built from millions of LEGO bricks. Children and adults alike consistently rate it as their highlight
🧱Build time is free time — LEGOLAND has multiple free-build areas where kids can create for as long as they want. Budget unscheduled time here — this often becomes the favourite part of the day
🏨LEGOLAND Hotel tip — hotel guests get early park access and rooms themed by LEGO world (Pirate, Kingdom, Adventure). It’s genuinely magical for LEGO-obsessed kids aged 4–10 and often sells out months ahead in summer
🟡
Theme Park — Chula Vista Best Ages: 2–8
Sesame Place California
📍 2052 Entertainment Cir, Chula Vista · ~30 min from PB
The only Sesame Street-themed park on the entire West Coast — and the replacement for the beloved Aquatica Water Park at the same Chula Vista location. Sesame Place is purpose-built for the youngest family members: seven Sesame Street-themed rides, 11 water attractions including a 500,000-gallon wave pool, and a large interactive musical play area designed for toddlers and early elementary-age children. The park runs live Sesame Street character shows, a daily parade with Elmo, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and friends, plus character meet-and-greet photo opportunities throughout the day. For families with children under 8, this is arguably the best bang-for-your-buck park in San Diego — short lines, age-appropriate thrills, and characters kids genuinely love. Older children and teens will likely find it too tame.

Balboa Park
📍 1549 El Prado, Balboa Park · ~20 min from PB
The cultural heart of San Diego — a 1,200-acre urban park and National Historic Landmark that houses 17 museums, the San Diego Zoo, multiple performance venues, stunning Spanish Colonial architecture, and some of the most beautiful public gardens in California. Entry to the park itself is completely free. The palm-lined El Prado promenade running through the centre is gorgeous at any time of day, flanked by the ornate California Building and its iconic California Tower, the Botanical Building and its famous Lily Pond, and the cluster of world-class museums. The Cabrillo Bridge provides a dramatic pedestrian entrance from the west. Kids love the free park carousel (small fee to ride), the trails through Florida Canyon, and the open lawns. The San Diego Zoo occupies the north end of the park. With so much to see, Balboa Park rewards multiple visits — and it’s a beautiful place just to walk and have a picnic at no cost whatsoever.

Free — La Jolla 💚 No Admission
La Jolla Cove
📍 1100 Coast Blvd, La Jolla · ~25 min from PB
One of San Diego’s most magical free experiences — a small, protected sea cove surrounded by sandstone cliffs where a large colony of California sea lions hauls out, swims, and nurses pups year-round. Watching sea lions from just a few feet away, completely in the wild, is an extraordinary thing for children to witness. The cove is also one of the premier snorkeling spots on the West Coast — the La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve offshore protects the marine ecosystem, meaning visibility is excellent and sea life abundant. After the cove, stroll the palm-lined Coast Walk Trail for dramatic cliff views, explore the Children’s Pool (sea lions often rest on the beach there), then walk up into La Jolla Village for lunch at one of the best restaurant strips in San Diego. Everything here is free except the food.

Old Town San Diego
📍 4002 Wallace St, Old Town San Diego · ~15 min from PB
The birthplace of California — and one of San Diego’s most visited and genuinely interesting free destinations. Old Town San Diego State Historic Park preserves the original settlement of California, with adobe buildings, artifacts, and living history demonstrations depicting the Kumeyaay people and the Spanish and Mexican colonial periods. Nearly everything is walkable. Kids love the Whaley House — designated by the US Commerce Department as one of two authenticated haunted houses in the US, offering daytime tours and popular evening ghost tours. The park has free admission to most outdoor areas and museums. After exploring, the surrounding streets have excellent Mexican restaurants, mariachi performances, craft shops, and souvenir stores. On weekends, costumed re-enactors bring the history to life. The Old Town Farmers Market on Wednesday mornings is excellent.

Nature Reserve ⚠ Trails Closed Until Mar 2026
Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve
📍 12600 N Torrey Pines Rd, La Jolla · ~25 min from PB
A stunning 1,750-acre coastal reserve perched on sandstone cliffs above Torrey Pines State Beach — home to the rare Torrey Pine tree, found naturally in only two places on Earth. The trails wind along the clifftops through twisted ancient pines with breathtaking ocean views at every turn — an exceptional introduction to nature for children who might not otherwise hike. The beach below is accessible by trail and is one of the most beautiful and uncrowded stretches of sand in San Diego. The reserve is also a world-class hang gliding site (Torrey Pines Gliderport is just north). Important note: all trails and roads within the main reserve are currently closed through approximately early March 2026 for construction. The beach remains open. Aquarium — La Jolla Scripps Institution of Oceanography
Birch Aquarium at Scripps
📍 2300 Expedition Way, La Jolla · ~25 min from PB
San Diego’s aquarium is smaller than major city aquariums elsewhere — and that’s partly what makes it so good for families. The Birch Aquarium is run by Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, one of the world’s premier ocean research institutions, which means the exhibits here have unusual scientific depth alongside hands-on accessibility for children. Over 60 habitats cover Pacific and tropical marine ecosystems, tide pools you can touch (the outdoor Tide Pool Plaza is a highlight), and the world-famous Seadragons and Seahorses exhibition — the aquarium is one of very few facilities in the world that successfully breeds both species. The location on the La Jolla cliffs above the ocean is spectacular, with views out over the Pacific from the outdoor areas. Budget 2–3 hours. Combine with La Jolla Cove (10 minutes away) for a full La Jolla morning.

What Not to Miss
🐢Tide Pool Plaza — the outdoor touch-tank area where kids can gently handle sea stars, urchins, and hermit crabs under the guidance of aquarium educators. The most popular exhibit for young children by a wide margin
🐍Seadragons & Seahorses — this exhibition is unique on the West Coast. Leafy seadragons are among the most extraordinary creatures in the ocean and virtually impossible to see elsewhere. The breeding program is a genuine scientific achievement
🌊The ocean view — the outdoor terrace above the cliff has one of the finest unobstructed Pacific views in San Diego. Bring a picnic and eat on the terrace before or after your visit
📍La Jolla loop: Birch Aquarium + La Jolla Cove (sea lions) + lunch in La Jolla Village is the perfect half-day itinerary for families. All three are within 10 minutes of each other

Botanic Garden — Encinitas Great for All Ages
San Diego Botanic Garden
📍 230 Quail Gardens Dr, Encinitas · ~35 min from PB
An absolute gem in Encinitas — 37 acres of 29 themed gardens that take you through ecosystems from tropical rainforests to California native landscapes to bamboo groves and Mediterranean hillsides. The range is genuinely surprising: a subtropical fruit garden, a desert garden, an Australian garden, and a full tropical rainforest section under glass. The Hamilton Children’s Garden is a dedicated space for young visitors with climbing structures, water features, interactive elements, and garden education programs. The garden hosts frequent special events including summer evening concerts and seasonal festivals. Classes and children’s programs run year-round. Far less crowded than the major theme parks — this is the kind of place families with curious kids tend to love and return to. Special event tickets are required for concerts — general garden admission is very reasonably priced.

Tips for Families Visiting San Diego
🎫
Always Buy Tickets Online
Every major San Diego attraction charges significantly more at the gate than online. SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, LEGOLAND, Sesame Place, and the Safari Park all offer discounts of 20–40% when purchased in advance online. CityPASS San Diego covers Zoo + SeaWorld + either USS Midway or Safari Park and saves meaningful money if you plan to visit three or more major attractions. Check each park’s website for the current deal before buying third-party.
🌡
San Diego Summer Heat
The coast is naturally cooled by the ocean breeze and rarely gets dangerously hot. Inland attractions (Safari Park, LEGOLAND) can be significantly warmer — 90°F+ in July and August. Reef-safe sunscreen, wide-brim hats, and plenty of water are essential. The San Diego Zoo is hilly and exposed — a stroller for under-5s isn’t optional, it’s a necessity. Marine layer (morning fog) often keeps coastal areas comfortable until noon even in summer.
🚺
Stroller & Carrier Tips
The San Diego Zoo is hilly enough that a stroller or carrier for under-5s is strongly recommended. LEGOLAND and SeaWorld are relatively flat. Most attractions permit strollers and have rental options at the entrance (budget $15–20/day). Baby carriers/slings are allowed everywhere. Compact umbrella strollers are easier to navigate than large travel systems at the Zoo — if you have one, bring it.
⏰
Timing Your Visits
Theme parks and the Zoo are busiest on weekends from late morning to mid-afternoon. For the best experience: arrive at opening, see the biggest attractions first (lines are shortest at 9–10am), take a midday break for lunch when crowds peak, and return to rides after 3pm when lines thin. Weekdays in June–August are no longer quieter due to summer vacation — but September weekdays are excellent. LEGOLAND is least busy on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
🍽
Saving Money on Food
Theme park food is expensive. Most parks permit outside food — a soft cooler backpack with snacks, sandwiches, and water is worth its weight in gold over a full day. The San Diego Zoo explicitly allows outside food. LEGOLAND and SeaWorld have designated picnic areas outside the main gates. If eating inside, kid’s meals are often the best value. Refillable souvenir cups at SeaWorld and LEGOLAND pay for themselves quickly on hot days.
🌊
Free Attractions Worth Your Time
San Diego has an impressive number of genuinely excellent free family experiences that often get skipped in favour of the paid parks. La Jolla Cove (wild sea lions, free), Balboa Park (1,200 acres, free), Old Town San Diego (free historic park), Mission Beach Boardwalk (free), and the tide pools at Cabrillo National Monument (small parking fee) are all world-class in their own right and ideal for half-days between bigger park visits.

The best family vacation starts with the right home base.

Our Mission Beach and Pacific Beach vacation rentals put Belmont Park and SeaWorld within minutes — and every other attraction on this list within an easy drive.
