Choose Your Adventure
Which Watercraft Is Right for You?
Jet Skis / Wave Runners
Best for: Thrill-seekers, groups of 1โ3
The highest-adrenaline option on the bay. Reach speeds of 55+ mph across open water. Mission Bay’s full-speed zone is the main playground. Minimum age 18 to operate. Always reserve ahead in summer โ they sell out fast. Adventure Water Sports and SD Adventures are our top picks.
Kayaks
Best for: All ages, beginners, wildlife viewing
The most versatile rental option. Sit-on-top kayaks are extremely stable and need zero experience. Mission Bay kayaking is calm and scenic; La Jolla kayaking is a genuine bucket-list experience (sea caves, leopard sharks, sea lions). Half-day enough for a La Jolla cave tour.
Stand-Up Paddleboards (SUP)
Best for: Fitness, beginners, scenic exploration
A great core workout and a genuinely fun way to see the bay. Mission Bay is the easiest place to learn โ calm, flat water with no ocean swell. La Jolla Shores offers a more adventurous SUP with the chance to spot leopard sharks below you. Most rentals include a brief orientation.
Powerboats & Ski Boats
Best for: Groups of 4โ6, wakeboarding, tubing
The most fun for groups. No boating license required in California โ just a valid driver’s license and a safety briefing. Mission Bay boats are ideal for wakeboarding and tubing behind the boat. Age 18+ to operate. Seaforth Boat Rentals and Mission Bay Sportcenter both have strong fleets.
Sailboats
Best for: Experienced sailors, romantic outings
Mission Bay and San Diego Bay offer excellent sailing conditions with consistent afternoon breezes. Sailboats range from 14โ22 ft and can be rented by the hour or full day. Lessons and skippers are available for less experienced sailors. Seaforth Boat Rentals and Mission Bay Aquatic Center lead the way for instruction.
Pontoon & Electric Boats
Best for: Large groups, easy cruising, celebrations
The social butterfly of watercraft. Pontoons seat up to 10โ11 people and are extremely stable โ perfect for groups who want to cruise around the bay and chat, not just go fast. Electric Duffy boats are quieter, dog-friendly, and great for evening harbor cruises. Eco Boat Rentals’ Pink Barbie charter is in a category of its own.
Pick Your Spot
Which Area Is Right for You?
Each of San Diego’s water areas has a completely different vibe, wildlife, and experience. Here’s how to pick the best one for your group.
๐๏ธ Mission Bay
Best for families, thrill-seekers, all skill levels
A protected 4,235-acre bay with no ocean swell โ calm, warm, and purpose-built for water recreation. The full-speed zone in the north end lets jet skis and ski boats open up. The east bay is calmer for kayaking and paddleboarding. Most Mission Beach and Pacific Beach vacation rentals are a short bike ride from the major rental spots.
Best rentals nearby: Mission Bay Sportcenter, Adventure Water Sports, Aqua Adventures, Seaforth Boat Rentals, MBAC
๐ฆญ La Jolla Shores & Cove
Best for ocean adventure, marine life, kayak tours
The most scenic and wildlife-rich water in San Diego. The Ecological Reserve is a Marine Protected Area โ no fishing allowed, so marine life thrives. Kayakers access the famous Seven Sea Caves. Summer brings one of the largest leopard shark gatherings in the world. More exposed to ocean swell than Mission Bay โ calm mornings are best for beginners.
Best rentals nearby: La Jolla Kayak, La Jolla Sea Cave Kayaks, Everyday California, Bike and Kayak Tours
โ San Diego Harbor & Shelter Island
Best for sightseeing, yacht charters, celebrations
Deep-water access to some of the most dramatic urban scenery in California โ the Coronado Bridge, USS Midway, Star of India, downtown skyline, and the Navy fleet. Less crowded than Mission Bay, with longer no-wake zones through the harbor. Shelter Island is the hub for luxury yacht charters and private boat rentals. Best for events, sunset cruises, and special occasions.
Best rentals nearby: SD Adventures, Aquata Charters, Malarky Charters, Eco Boat Rentals, Seaforth Boat Rentals
๐
Ocean Beach & Sunset Cliffs
Best for a local, laid-back vibe off the beaten path
Ocean Beach has a distinctly local, anti-touristy character compared to Mission Beach. The area isn’t a major rental hub, but Action Sport Rentals’ multi-location setup and Campland on the Bay (just east) cover most needs. The real draw here is the scenery โ Sunset Cliffs offers some of the most dramatic coastal rock formations in San Diego, best viewed from a kayak at low tide.
Best rentals nearby: Action Sport Rentals (7 locations), Campland Watercraft Rentals, Eco Boat Rentals
Before You Launch
Tips for First-Time Renters
Go Early for Calm Water
Mission Bay and La Jolla are both calmer in the morning before afternoon winds pick up. For La Jolla kayaking especially, 9โ11am gives you the flattest ocean conditions. Summer afternoons in Mission Bay can get choppy from boat wake โ mornings are more enjoyable for beginners.
Reserve Ahead in Summer
Jet skis, ski boats, and pontoon boats at popular Mission Bay locations book solid on summer weekends โ sometimes days in advance. Kayaks and SUPs are generally walk-up friendly. If you have a specific date and watercraft in mind, reserve online as soon as you confirm your travel dates.
Reef-Safe Sunscreen Only
La Jolla’s Ecological Reserve is a Marine Protected Area. Regular sunscreen chemicals (oxybenzone, octinoxate) are toxic to marine life. Use mineral-based reef-safe sunscreen if you’re snorkeling, kayaking, or swimming at La Jolla Cove, La Jolla Shores, or any ocean location.
Wear the Right Shoes
Non-slip water shoes or sandals are ideal for kayaking and getting in and out of boats. La Jolla Shores has a rocky shoreline near the caves โ bare feet are not recommended. Flip flops are genuinely dangerous on powerboat decks. Leave them at your rental and wear proper footwear on the water.
Bringing Your Dog
Dogs are welcome on Eco Boat Rentals’ pedal and electric boats (they’ll provide a doggy life jacket). Mission Bay is generally dog-friendly from the shore. La Jolla Cove, the Children’s Pool, and most guided tour vessels are dog-free zones. Always call ahead to confirm dog policies before booking.
Ocean vs. Bay โ Know the Difference
Mission Bay is protected from ocean swell โ calm, flat, and ideal for beginners. La Jolla and ocean kayaking involves real ocean conditions: swells, currents, and surf. Both are manageable for most people, but La Jolla is more appropriate for confident swimmers. All rental operators will assess conditions and advise on the day.
Stay steps from the water.
Our Mission Beach and Pacific Beach vacation rentals put you minutes from Mission Bay, La Jolla, and the harbor โ the perfect base for every water adventure on this page.
