Fiesta Island
Located in Mission Bay, Fiesta Island is a dog’s dream! Not only is it an off-leash park, and one of the most popular in San Diego, but it provides multiple types of activities depending on how adventurous your dog is.
First, you have the bay shoreline park, which spans over half a mile. Dogs can run wild on the narrow beach, plus can swim or play fetch into the open bay. There is usually quite a bit of water traffic, so expect waves.
Next, there is a land trail on the cliffs above the shore line. Perfect for a leisurely stroll, a typical game of fetch, and plenty of blooming flowers during the springtime.
Finally, there is also an inner bay section, with far less water traffic, very few waves, plus shallower and warmer water.
Dog Beach (Ocean Beach)
The original off-leash, dog-friendly beach in San Diego, Dog Beach has long been a staple of the Ocean Beach community.
Featuring hundreds of yards of sandy beach, perfect for training, playing, lounging, and chasing, Dog Beach is a stretch of ocean front shore just south of the jetty between Mission and Ocean Beach.
The highlight is clearly the stretch of beach front, specifically designed for dogs to run wild into the waves. There is also a small inlet with no waves, but with a strong current. However, be sure to check for rip tides and currents the further you get out from the shore line. It is also a popular surfing location, but those tides are a bit too far out, and rough, for doggos.
Kate Sessions Park
Arguably the best view in the entire city of San Diego, Kate Sessions Park sits high up top of Pacific Beach, and bridges the gap into La Jolla. The scenery is stunning, with views of the southern coast, the Ocean Beach Pier, Mission Bay, Downtown, Mount Helix, and even Tijuana on a clear day.
The grassy knolls and hillsides of the park make it perfect for a day, or sunset trip, with your furry friend. Relax and have a picnic, or socialize with the numerous other dogs at the park.
It also makes a great location to workout with your dog. The hill inclines are steep, plus there is a paved walkway around the park and through its valley, including multiple water fountains.
Balboa Park
While, unfortunately, your dog isn’t allowed in any of the museums with you, there are still plenty of things to do in one of the country’s largest parks, spanning over 1,000 acres of flowers, new smells and activities.
The park requires all pets on a leash, but there are two off-leash parks. One at Balboa Drive and El Prado. The second being at Nate’s Point, south of the Cabrillo Bridge.
Already making the list of our favorite family activities in San Diego, Balboa park is an absolutely gorgeous area, with plenty of trails and things to see, all while enjoying the scenery with your pooch!
San Diego Padres Games
The Padres are San Diego’s most beloved sports team. No matter if you enjoy baseball or not, who can turn down taking their dog to the “Barkyard” and letting your furry friend enjoy America’s Pastime?
Located in the dog-friendly outfield viewing areas in left-center field, you can take your dog to every Padres home game. Packages are limited to up to four people and two dogs.
Even better news is that Petco Park is located in the beautiful Gaslamp Quarter downtown, and is one of the finest parks in all of Major League Baseball. You can enjoy many local craft beers and cocktails, a grassy area to post up, plus have access to plenty of food and shopping vendors inside Gallagher Square.
Pet Friendly Bars & Breweries
San Diego is home to some of the finest breweries in the country. Not only can you grab an amazing local brew, but many have games, food, and even food trucks. Additionally, considering the city and the weather, most also allow dogs!
Nearly half of the San Diego breweries consider themselves “dog friendly”. So take advantage of the breweries, tasting rooms and micropubs throughout the area. Keep in mind that the size of spaces will vary, and that you may be asked to keep your dog in the outdoor seating area.

Hiking
For as much as us humans enjoy getting out and enjoying a sunny day in nature, dogs love it just as much, if not more. Thankfully, San Diego has some amazing trails for hiking, many of which are within a 20 minute drive of our vacation rentals, and some much closer than that.
We always recommend Iron Mountain, which is an intermediate trail in North County. Keep in mind it is inland, can get hot during the days, and like all trails, has the potential to encounter rattlesnakes. Bring plenty of water and be sure to keep your doggo on a leash, especially if they are not rattlesnake trained.
Cowles Mountain is a friendlier trail near San Diego State. However, it is quite popular, so make sure to consider that if you plan on hiking on a weekend, or after work hours during the week.
Other Off-Leash Parks
Safe, off-leash parks are fantastic ways to socialize, allow your dog to release some energy, plus are extremely popular in San Diego.
The king of them all, at least near the beach area, is Dusty Rhodes Park. Located in Ocean Beach, right off the 8 Freeway, it has two parks. One for larger or more confident dogs, and a second for smaller ones. Featuring grass, sand, trees, and plenty of outdoor seating.
Downtown has an extremely unique setup called Quartyard. Frequently home to live music, art and clothing displays, beer, food, but it also has a built in dog park.
Finally, Charles L. Lewis III Memorial Park in City Heights, has a half-acre single pen on the northern side of the park.
