Belching Beaver Brewery
📍 Ocean Beach, North Park, Vista, Oceanside · OB is closest to our rentals
One of San Diego’s most beloved and genuinely unique breweries — Belching Beaver has built a loyal following through outside-the-box brewing that produces beers everyone can enjoy, from hop-heads to people who claim they don’t like beer. Their label designs are as whimsical as their beer names. With locations in Ocean Beach, North Park, Vista, and Oceanside, they’re conveniently close to all of our vacation rentals. The Ocean Beach taproom is dog-friendly throughout the outdoor area — perfect for a post-Dog Beach or Sunset Cliffs walk. Their food menu includes solid bar food that pairs well with anything on tap. The Peanut Butter Milk Stout is genuinely one of the most talked-about beers in San Diego — and the Peanut Butter Milk Stout Float takes it to another level entirely. Don’t leave without trying it.

Must-Try at Belching Beaver
🧈Peanut Butter Milk Stout Float — yes, it’s a beer float. Creamy, rich, and completely addictive. The most talked-about thing on their menu and absolutely worth ordering before you even look at the tap list
🍻Viva La Beaver — peanut butter, cinnamon, and coffee milk stout. If you liked the float, this is the next logical step. Dessert in a glass
🐾Dog-friendly OB patio — the Ocean Beach location welcomes dogs on the outdoor patio. Walk from Dog Beach or Sunset Cliffs and stop in for a round
📍North Park location has a larger taproom with more rotating taps and a full food menu — worth the 20-minute drive if you want the full Belching Beaver experience

Craft Brewery Gold Medal — Sculpin IPA
Ballast Point Brewing
📍 Little Italy, Miramar, Scripps Ranch · ~20 min from PB
One of the most decorated and recognizable craft breweries to come out of San Diego, Ballast Point was founded in 1996 and quickly earned national acclaim for the Sculpin IPA — a gold-medal-winning West Coast IPA that became a benchmark for the style. Their Little Italy flagship location is stunning, with a full restaurant, gorgeous indoor/outdoor space, and views of the harbor. Known not just for their beer but for iconic, artful label designs across their entire lineup. The Miramar location doubles as a production facility with a tasting room. Sculpin remains the must-order, but the seasonal and limited releases are worth exploring on any visit.

Craft Brewery 9th Largest US Craft Brewer
Stone Brewing
📍 World Bistro: 1999 Citracado Pkwy, Escondido · Point Loma · SD Airport
The ninth-largest craft brewer in the United States and one of San Diego’s most internationally recognized brands, Stone Brewing was founded in 1996 and has grown to seven locations including a facility at the San Diego Airport. Their World Bistro & Gardens in Escondido is the crown jewel — a magnificent indoor/outdoor complex with sprawling gardens, a full-service bistro, and an extensive beer list. Two Point Loma locations make Stone a convenient stop near our vacation rentals. Known for their bold hop-forward IPAs: the flagship Stone IPA, the Delicious IPA (gluten-reduced), and the Hazy IPA are all worth ordering. For something lighter, the Buenaveza Salt & Lime Lager is a perfect San Diego beach beer.

Craft Brewery + Coffee The Mothership — Point Loma
Modern Times Beer
📍 3725 Greenwood St, Point Loma (Mothership) · North Park · Encinitas
Modern Times launched in 2013 and quickly became one of San Diego’s most interesting and ambitious craft breweries — partly because they also run a coffee roastery out of the same building. Their original “Mothership” location in Point Loma is modern, bright, and visually striking, with an expansive taproom that regularly has food vendors on-site. Their beer range covers an impressive span: classic West Coast IPA, hazy pale ale, tart gose, wild sours, coffee stouts, and hard seltzer. The coffee crossovers (stouts and porters brewed with their own roasted beans) are some of the best in the city. Additional tasting rooms in North Park and Encinitas. Outdoor seating at the Mothership is dog-friendly.

Historic Winery — Est. 1889 Oldest Winery in Southern California
Bernardo Winery
📍 13330 Paseo Del Verano Norte, Rancho Bernardo · ~40 min from PB
Dating back to 1889, Bernardo Winery is one of the oldest continually operating wineries in Southern California and a remarkable slice of San Diego history. Originally part of a Spanish land grant, the winery’s production facility is housed in a century-old building that was once a barn for tractors — the original redwood tanks and equipment remain on display, making tours a genuinely fascinating history lesson as much as a wine experience. Grapes are locally sourced, producing primarily Syrah, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay. The property has evolved into a charming village of boutique shops, an art gallery, and a tasting room set among mature pepper trees and gardens. A half-day trip that feels nothing like a typical winery visit.

What to Know Before You Go
🛖The tour is the highlight — old-world winemaking methods, massive redwood barrels over 130 years old, and a building that was originally a tractor barn. A genuinely unique experience
🛒Plan for the village — the property has charming boutique shops, an art gallery, and beautiful grounds. Budget 2–3 hours to enjoy the full experience comfortably
🍷Try the Syrah — locally sourced grapes make for wines with a distinct San Diego character. The Syrah and Zinfandel are consistently the best bottles to take home
🚗40 minutes from PB — easy inland drive through Scripps Ranch and Rancho Bernardo. A perfect mid-week half-day escape when beach weather calls for a break

Temecula Valley Winery Top 25 Wineries — Reader’s Digest
Baily Vineyard & Winery
📍 33440 La Serena Way, Temecula · ~75 min from PB
Named one of the top 25 wineries in the United States by Reader’s Digest and home to two nationally award-winning wines, Baily Vineyard & Winery is a standout in Temecula’s increasingly competitive wine country. Their 2021 Grandol Rosé and 2021 Riesling both won Double Gold Medals, with the Riesling selected as the best semi-dry Riesling at the Los Angeles Invitational. The 29-acre estate is planted primarily with Bordeaux varieties — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec — alongside the Riesling and white varietals. Two separate tasting locations on-site make it easy to explore the full range. A production facility tour is available and genuinely illuminating.

Temecula Valley Winery 🐾 Dog Friendly
Miramonte Winery
📍 33410 Rancho California Rd, Temecula · ~75 min from PB
Established in 2000, Miramonte is one of Temecula’s most forward-thinking boutique wineries, with a singular focus on Rhône varieties — Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault — and more recently, traditional Spanish and Portuguese grapes. The vineyard was redeveloped using a gardening rather than farming approach, producing wines with remarkable depth and character. The hilltop location delivers breathtaking views of the Temecula Valley. Miramonte typically has a live outdoor band on weekends, extensive shaded patio seating, a full bistro menu, and is one of the few Temecula wineries that explicitly welcomes leashed dogs on their outdoor grounds — making it the best dog-friendly wine destination near San Diego.

🇲🇽 Cross-Border Wine Country — Valle de Guadalupe
🌱
Valle de Guadalupe, Baja California ⭐ Staff Pick — Best Day Trip
Decantos Vinícola
📍 Valle de Guadalupe, Ensenada, Baja California, México · ~2 hrs from PB
The Valle de Guadalupe produces 90% of Mexico’s wine — and crossing the border for a day trip to this stunning valley is one of the most underrated experiences available from San Diego. Decantos Vinícola is our top pick from the valley: a beautifully designed winery with panoramic valley views, both indoor and outdoor seating, premium tastings, and private tour options. The wines lean earthier and more mineral-driven than Temecula reds, offering an interesting contrast and a sense of genuine terroir. The entire Valle has developed an extraordinary culinary scene (including some of the best open-air restaurants in Mexico), making a full day trip easy to fill. You’ll need a valid US passport. Traffic at the San Ysidro crossing on the return can be significant — plan to cross back before 3pm or after 7pm for shorter waits.

Planning the Valle Day Trip
🛂Bring a valid US passport — required for border crossing in both directions. A passport card works. REAL ID does not. Have it accessible at both crossing points
⏰Leave early, return early — cross into Mexico before 10am for smooth traffic. Plan to return by 3pm or after 7pm to avoid the San Ysidro border backup
🍴The food scene is extraordinary — the Valle has some of Mexico’s best restaurants. Lunala, Finca Altozano, and Malva are all nearby and worth building the day around
🚗Car recommended — driving yourself gives you the most flexibility. Alternately, several San Diego tour companies run guided Valle de Guadalupe wine tours from the coast

Beyond These Four: Exploring SD’s Beer Scene
📍 North Park, Mission Hills, Miramar, Encinitas · All within 30 min
Our four featured breweries are just the beginning. San Diego’s craft beer scene is extraordinarily deep — the Miramar corridor alone has over 20 tasting rooms within walking distance of each other, often called San Diego’s “Beer Row.” Other local favorites near our rentals include Mike Hess Brewing (North Park & Mission Hills — dog-friendly patios), Karl Strauss Brewing (multiple locations, a San Diego institution since 1989), AleSmith Brewing (Miramar — widely considered one of the best in the US), and Pizza Port (Ocean Beach and Solana Beach — craft beer plus exceptional pizza). Virtually all have outdoor seating, most welcome dogs, and many have rotating guest food trucks.

Temecula Valley Wine Country
~75 min from PB · 40+ wineries
Temecula Valley is Southern California’s most established wine region — 40+ wineries clustered in a compact, walkable area along Rancho California Road. The valley sits at 1,500 feet elevation, producing excellent Bordeaux varietals, Rhône-style reds, and increasingly impressive whites. Baily and Miramonte (covered above) are our staff picks, but the area rewards wandering. Most wineries are open Thursday through Sunday. Several offer shuttle services between tasting rooms. Book accommodation at one of the vineyard properties for a weekend away from the coast.

Valle de Guadalupe, Baja California
~2 hrs from PB · Passport required
The Valle de Guadalupe is Mexico’s Napa — a sprawling wine valley 90 minutes south of San Diego that produces 90% of the country’s wine. The food scene here is extraordinary, with world-class open-air restaurants alongside the tasting rooms. The wines are more earthy and mineral-driven than California counterparts, and the entire experience feels genuinely distinct from domestic wine country. A valid US passport is required. Cross at San Ysidro or Otay Mesa. Plan the return trip carefully to avoid multi-hour border waits — cross back before 3pm or after 7pm.

Tips for Visiting San Diego Breweries & Wineries
🚗
Designate a Driver (or Use Rideshare)
For any serious brewery or winery crawl, designate a driver or use Uber/Lyft. The Miramar “Beer Row” area has multiple breweries within walking distance of each other — the easiest way to experience it. For Temecula, several shuttle and tour companies operate from San Diego. For the Valle de Guadalupe, tour groups are available from the coast and eliminate the parking and border logistics entirely.
⏰
Best Times to Visit
Most San Diego taprooms are quieter Thursday afternoons and Friday mornings — ideal for relaxed tasting without waiting for seats. Weekend afternoons (2–5pm) at popular spots like Belching Beaver OB and Stone Point Loma can get crowded. Temecula and Valle de Guadalupe wineries are busiest on Saturday afternoons — going Sunday morning or weekday is significantly calmer and often includes better staff interaction and food availability.
🐾
Bringing Your Dog
San Diego’s outdoor drinking culture means a large percentage of brewery patios welcome leashed dogs. Belching Beaver OB, Modern Times Mothership, Mike Hess North Park, and Miramonte Winery are all explicitly dog-friendly outdoors. Always confirm before arriving, especially with larger dogs. Bring a collapsible bowl — many spots will fill it but few have dedicated dog water stations. Dogs are not permitted inside any licensed premises regardless of the venue’s outdoor policy.
📋
Border Crossing for Valle de Guadalupe
A valid US passport (book or card) is required to cross into Mexico and return to the US. REAL ID is not sufficient. The San Ysidro crossing (the world’s busiest land border crossing) can have 2–4 hour waits on Sunday evenings and holiday weekends. The Otay Mesa crossing is less busy and worth considering. The CBP One app shows current wait times. Mexican auto insurance is required for US vehicles driven across the border — it can be purchased online in minutes for a day rate.
🍷
What to Order if You’re New to It
At San Diego craft breweries: start with the flagship IPA to understand the house style, then ask the bartender what’s on limited release — this is usually where the most interesting brewing is happening. For wine novices at Temecula or the Valle: tell the pourers what wines you typically enjoy and they’ll guide you well. Most tasting rooms also sell their best bottles to take home — allocation wines and vintages not available elsewhere are often the best value.
🍴
Eat Something First
Ballast Point and Stone Brewing both have full restaurant menus. Belching Beaver has solid bar food. Modern Times usually has a food vendor on-site. For Temecula and the Valle, most major wineries now have bistros or partner with food trucks — check before you go to avoid arriving hungry. At the Valle specifically, building the day around a long lunch at one of the valley’s renowned open-air restaurants (Finca Altozano, Lunala, Malva) makes the entire trip worthwhile.

Stay close to the good stuff.

Our Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, and Ocean Beach vacation rentals put you 10–20 minutes from Belching Beaver, Stone, Modern Times, and Ballast Point — and less than 90 minutes from Temecula wine country.
