About Ocean Beach, California
Locally known as “OB,” this relaxed beach community sits directly on the Pacific Ocean, south across the jetty from Mission Beach. Located at the western end of Interstate 8, OB is centrally positioned β close to San Diego International Airport and downtown, yet with a neighborhood feel that couldn’t be more distinct from either.
Ocean Beach is driven by small, independent, locally owned businesses. Newport Avenue β the neighborhood’s main street β has featured family-owned shops and restaurants since the 1930s and still does today. Bars, restaurants, beer tasting rooms, antique dealers, and surf shops line the street as it runs west toward the water. The community actively resisted chain businesses entering the neighborhood for decades, a point of pride that’s woven into OB’s identity.
Key Landmarks
The Ocean Beach Pier is the longest concrete pier on the entire West Coast and one of the neighborhood’s defining landmarks. Dog Beach β located at the northern end of OB β is one of the few off-leash beaches in San Diego and draws pet owners from across the region year-round.
